Chef Kyle Patterson has created a menu of elevated classic American cuisine, and the weekend brunch at Sinema is an excellent opportunity to try out his food. Paying homage to the old cinema, Sinema exudes an elegant vintage Hollywood cool vibe, with classic movies playing on large screens, a sexy upstairs lounge featuring crafty cocktails named after movie titles and one of the city’s deepest whiskey collections. Five years ago, Sinema opened in the former theater space and was a major part of revitalizing Melrose. The area used to be popular as the home to an opulent old movie house and a fun bowling alley, but those went dormant years ago, and the strip that housed them lay basically empty until finally being developed as a new retail and residential complex. This was more of a “blink-and-you’ll-miss it” stretch of road which didn’t really offer many opportunities for drinking and dining. "Expect to drink cold beer and shoot pool in the place again - hopefully by the end of the year.A decade ago, visitors to Nashville rarely paid any attention to the Melrose neighborhood of 8th Ave South/Franklin Pike between Wedgewood and where the I-440/65 interchange soars over the edge of the neighborhood. "There’s still planning to do, but we foresee expanding the offerings some and restoring some old glory without changing the feel," he said. Melrose Billiards' basement location at the redeveloped historic Melrose Theater on the western edge of Berry Hill's Melrose district is located below The Sutler Saloon. But Ray said the new bar would be a separate concept from that restaurant, pub and live music venue. Ray, the new leaseholder for the Melrose Billiards space, said renovations should start in early October to update the structure and function of the building, including to ensure that it doesn't flood again. Jerry Chandler, who along with his brother Jim Chandler have owned and operated Melrose Billiards for 47 years, said before losing the lease at 2600 Franklin Pike he'd looked forward to his children eventually taking over that business. ![]() “We want to preserve the vibe and character of what’s in there now and update it a little bit,” he said. Ray Hospitality now holds the lease to the basement of the historic former Melrose Theater complex, where the pool hall and dive bar has operated for more than 70 years.
